Dedication of Barry
Dawe Memorial October 4 St. Aidan's grounds
About 50 friends, neighbours and family gathered on Sunday,
Ocober 4 for the dedication of the Barry Dawe Memorial located on the corner of Washington Avenue and Queen Mary
Drive. A brief ceremony was held inside the church, and several speakers shared fond memories of Barry.
It was particularly nice to have Barry's mom, Pearl, and his three brothers, Wayne, Bruce and Ross there to take part in the
dedication.

Barry, who passed away in the Spring of 2008, was the former President of the WRRA. He was loved and respected
in the neighbourhood and the Town. Everyone got to know Barry, as he spent well over 20 years involved in the
West River Residents Association. Barry held the position of Treasurer for most of those years. Barry was a "Steady
Eddie", always helping people accomplish projects. He has left our neighbourhood but not our memories. Thank you
Barry, for making the "'hood" a better place to live. His memorial
features an inscribed bronze plaque set into stones which form an Inuit Inukshuk.
TONY MIHOK

Tony Mihok was born in Hungary and emigrated to Canada with his parents during the 1956 Hungarian revolution.
Tony became interested in fine art and photography at an early age, and after moving to Oakville in 1958, had his first
show here at the Oakville Centennial Gallery in 1968.
He began his professional photography career in 1970, and since 1978 has maintained an active fine art and photography
business from his in-home studio. During that time he has established an outstanding reputation in the art community.
Tony will even give you a personal private showing of his beautiful work if you set up an appointment with him by calling
905 844-9094. Or you can see and order his work by visiting his website.
Great to have you as a neighbour, Tony!
HOWARD WILLS
Received the 2002 Town of Oakville's
Community Volunteer Spirit Award
With no plans to slow down, this Bartos Drive senior makes our community very special indeed.

Born and raised in China 77 years ago, before moving to Australia as a teenager, he has taken great pleasure
in revisiting the land of his birth over the years.
A former life insurance company employee, Howard and his wife Jeanne moved into their home on Bartos in
1982.
The Wills married in 1968, just 10 weeks after meeting while hiking in a rain storm. "I thought for sure I'd be
a confirmed bachelor forever," says Howard, with a chuckle.
Sadly, Jeanne passed away on Christmas in 1984. To honour her memory, Howard has kept their holiday tree intact in the
living room, for all to see when they enter.
"I love my home and it's so convenient to everything," enthuses Howard. "I never need to use air conditioning
because of the huge catalpa tree in the backyard. It covers the entire house." (Howard is shown by his tree in
the picture below.)
Howard can be seen around the community --- he walks everywhere. He stays active by volunteering his time.
His volunteer efforts include the Kerr Street Organic Farmers Market, the Morden Public School/breakfast program, Colbourne
Senior Centre, St. Paul's United Church, Salvation Army and Kerr Street Ministries.
"I plan to volunteer as long as I can," he adds. "I encourage anyone with time to give to help out where they can.
All you need is the willingness when called upon to service your community."

Howard would like to remind everyone that some of our local stores and merchants are very thoughtful and generous in
their donations of food or home products to the Kerr Street Ministries.
You can contribute too. Please feel free to drop in and get a feel for a place that needs your help. You can
also call KSM and ask what type of items they could use most. (905) 845-7485

can receive.

MALCOLM "MEL" TEAL
What an outstanding neighbour! Mel is our local wood worker who continues to impress us with his hand made
Canadian Mounties and bird houses, along with numerous patterns for many other wooden projects.
Born in Nova Scotia, Mel eventually worked his way to Ontario where he met and married Hazel. They have lived at 446 Queen
Mary Drive for the past 33 years. Hazel is a regular at our Ladies Night Out and whenever we have a Bake Sale, you'd be a
lucky person to get hold of her homemade fudge - it went really fast at our Community Picnic!
Mel has been the maintenance man at St. Aidan’s Church for the past year, and the church always looks tidy and clean.
Cheryl Fricker (the pastor) can’t say enough good things about Mel. "He even made us a picnic table just out of the
goodness of his heart. He is always so friendly and cheerful.”
